3D PRINTED CNC

I finally did what everyone was asking for, I machined all the parts of the 3D printed CNC out of aluminium. I used both 10 mm and 6 mm flat stock to machine all the mechanical parts and then I used a lot of elbow grease to make the borders nicer. Drilled and taped al the holes by hand but I positioned them with small marks made with the CNC. Before the change was very difficult to make the walls cut by the bit perfectly vertical because of the flex of the entire structure. After the modification the walls are perfectly vertical as far as I can tell. I also reinforced the Y axis rail beams with two more vertical posts on each side and swapped the bridge aluminium beams for steel ones. An extra benefit of this change is that I can push the motors a little bit further now as the aluminium brackets help a lot with heat dissipation were the 3D printed parts melted. There are a few improvements that still can be made, like the vacuum hood which now sits too high and does almost nothing but this is now a machine that performs extremely well for my needs. Now let’s thing of things that I can make with this machine or projects that I can bring back for a more metallic finish 😉 Leave your ideas in the comments and I’ll see what I can do.

The Mekanika EVO CNC Router is a compact, yet a capable machine that’s aimed at the semi-professional market. I tested the machine for the last two months and will tell you if it’s worth the money you are paying or just an expensive toy! Let’s find out more!

Update #1 22-03-07: The “DI Spindel” upgrade is not only the spindle itself but also includes additional electronics within the electronics box, which makes the €300 price a bit more reasonable but also means that you will not be able to upgrade to the DI Spindle if you purchase the Standard Spindle at first.

3D printing has become much cheaper and accessible, but there has been a lack of decent CNC routers at the same price point. Now the 3018 CNC Pro from Sainsmart aims to fill that void.

Featuring a working volume of 300 x 180 x 45mm, this CNC router goes together well and is capable of machining timber, acrylic and aluminium. It can also engrave copper to make custom PCBs. This machine largely succeeded with everything I threw at it. For this low price plus a one year warranty, I am very impressed and recommend this for beginners looking to get into the hobby.

I have done a fair bit of CNC machining over the years by am by no means a professional machinist. I look forward to the great tips knowledgeable viewers will post in the comments to assist others.
For any cutters you buy, ensure they are 1/8 inch or 3.175mm in shank diameter.

Today I’m going to be looking at the Genmitsu ProverXL 4030 cnc router. Now I reviewed the 4030’s smaller sibling, the Prover 3018 over a year ago and I’ll leave a link to that video in case you’re curious. Now in the interest of full disclosure, Sainsmart did send me this machine to review; but they are not paying me for this review and have no input on what I say about the machine. The ProverXL 4030 came packaged in a large box with all the parts pretty well padded for the most part. More about the packaging later in the video. Now, Sainsmart markets this as an “easy to set up machine”. And honestly that is a real stretch. The Prover XL 4030 took me almost 5 hours to assemble and required a lot of patience to assemble. This isn’t a plug-n-play machine; be prepared to invest the time to get it running. The manual isn’t all that well written and mis-states certain details or doesn’t provide enough clarity on others. The most glaring example was the part that describes the wiring of the spindle. The manual states that there is no specific polarity for wiring the spindle motor. And yet the connectors on the spindle and the wiring looms are color-coded to assure proper connection. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but just something Sainsmart needs to work to improve. A few more pointers when assembling the machine. When attaching the x-axis drag chain to the frame, be very patient and careful when threading in the two screws, as there’s very little space to work with. You don’t want to end up damaging the threads by cross threading the screws. Again, another design issue Sainsmart can work on. Also, the wiring from the x-axis limit switches interferes with the screws that attach the mounting plate to the frame. I found that to be pretty sloppy design work and should just get fixed. There’s just no excuse for this. Another thing to consider when assembling the machine is the table or surface it will sit on. I recommend a table that’s at least 48 inches wide by 24 inches deep. This will give you enough space to accommodate the machine and control unit. You also want to make sure the table is extremely sturdy and can handle the vibration when the machine is working. I’ll leave a few table options in the description below the video, in case you need a sturdy table.
