If ya know, ya know! We finally took delivery of our @ShopSabre CNC Sidekick 10 Plasma Cutting table!

For those that don’t know, a plasma cutter is the closest thing we have to an actual lightsaber here on earth. It uses a high-voltage electrical arc to split atoms creating plasma, which is then forced through metal with compressed air in a really tight beam of metal slicing energy. The CNC part, or computer numeric control, is where this technology is taken to the next level. Parts can be designed in a drafting software then sent to the included computer where its turned into a set of movement instructions for all the motors responsible for moving the gantry around the table. The level of precision possible with a machine like this is incredible, not to mention part repeatability.

Tay went back and forth about this move for quite a while but having been a fabricator for almost 15 years, he saw how a machine like this can do things that are either too time consuming or just plain impossible by hand. We are so stoked to see what becomes possible here at the studio with a machine like this. What should we build first?

In this video, I summarized quickly all the tricks and tips that I did to make my cheap plasma cutter cut50P (P for “pilot arc”) works perfectly with my home-built CNC plasma cutting table.
– 1st tip: Use bigger torch that was designed for higher current. That way the nozzle and the electrode will last longer and the cut quality will be more consistent.
– 2nd tip: Connect the trigger wire directly from the connector on the plasma cutter to the relay and keep it far away from the pilot arc wire and the the air hose to avoid HF noises and interference.
– 3rd tip: If your arc is sputtering, the plasma cutter doesn’t cut continuously, you will have to check inside the plasma cutter and adjust the spark gap. Keep it at reasonable distance (0.8mm following the manufacture manual).
– 4th tip: use 220V instead of 110V. 220V will make the arc more stable and also the plasma cutter will have higher duty cycle when cutting at high amperage.

I finally got to a setup of my CNC plasma cutting table that is interference free. That I can cut successfully every time without worrying that the high frequency noise will stop Mach3 in the middle.
This was achieved by using a breakout board that is connected to Mach3 through an Ethernet port.
The Ethernet protocol is more resilient against interference because the platform was design to transmit signal through a long distance without the errors inserted into the information being transmitted.
There are other choices of plasma cutter that can help avoiding the interference from the source, such as: blowback pilot arc plasma cutter, scratch off arc start plasma cutter.
Those plasma cutters don’t use high frequency voltage to initiate the arc, therefore, no high frequency interference.
With type of plasma cutters, you can use an USB breakout board for the low cost and convenience. But an Ethernet breakout controller board is still a better choice.
Mach3 or other platform that support the function of a THC system are recommended, therefore, GRBL based controller are not considered for plasma cutter for the lack of compatibility with THC system.

Howdy viewers!

You guys have seen bits and pieces of what it’s been like for us to get to know our Shop Sabre CNC plasma table over the past few videos, but we wanted to make a more in-depth video walking you through all the facets of this machine, the good things, the bad things and the things we wish we knew before we bought it!

Consider this an unofficial review hosted by a barely qualified CNC plasma owner/operator. Tay walks you through his thought process before he bought the machine, what it was like to take delivery of it, how the set up process went, what early issues he ran into and what adjustments he’s made since to get the table to cut the way it’s supposed to.

If you’re curious about buying a table like this, we would strongly recommend checking out @ShopSabre CNC their customer service is outstanding and their product is top notch for the money.

A good example of another small (ish) metal shop who does a lot of CNC plasma work is @42Fab – Metal Fabrication & Signage , Tay watched a lot of their videos before pulling the trigger on our own machine.

Also, check out @Maker Table for more juicy plasma and laser cutting content, and to get rad DXF files for your plasma table!
