In this episode I use my brother’s CNC router (that he originally built for making guitars) to machine out the Z axis motor mount and I build my own 70 volt DC power supply for the stepper motors…

Transformer: Toroidal 750VA 230v AC – 24 x 24 AC output – wired in series – AirlinkTransformers.com
Vishay GBPC3504-E4/51 Bridge Rectifier
3x 4700μF 100V DC 35mm Capacitors
2x 1K2 5W resistors wired in series to discharge capacitors when mains power removed.

Still to do – Fuse the 48V output from transformer and individual outputs to Stepper Drivers.

My objective for this project is to design and build a CNC milling machine without the need for any machining of the parts. Ordinarily, building a mill requires a much bigger mill to get the axis surfaces flat and parallel.

By using aluminum tool plate (which is in theory pre-machined flat) and bolting the critical components rather than welding, it should be possible to avoid any machine work. After all, I’m building a mill because I don’t have one!

Linear rails and ball screws are the cheap Chinese 20mm style that you can find on eBay etc.

This time I’m building the Z axis and mounting it to the column. I’m probably going to regret saying this, but hopefully this concludes the majority of the locating, drilling and tapping of holes.

– Wiring up the operators control panel
– Add an upper limit switch for the Z axis
– Add a pneumatic strut to support the Z
– First machine movements and backlash testing

In this video I’ll be building the enclosure around the machine. I have used 3030 aluminium extrusion to construct the frame and 4mm polycarbonate for the doors and front panel. I used a cheaper (but arguably less safe) material for the sides where people are much less likely to be stood if a cutter tries to escape!

I also make some rail extensions and install bellows on the X and Y axes, as well as begin to mount the spindle clamp to Z axis.

In the next episode i’ll be mounting and wiring up the Chinese 3KW ER20 spindle!
