DIY CNC Milling machine build.

My objective for this project was to design and build a CNC milling machine without the need for any machining of the parts. Ordinarily, building a mill requires a much bigger mill to get the axis surfaces flat and parallel.

By using aluminium tool plate (which is in theory pre-machined flat) and bolting the critical components rather than welding, it should be possible to avoid any machine work. After all, I’m building a mill because I don’t have one!

Linear rails and ball screws are the cheap Chinese 20mm style that you can find on eBay etc.

3D printing has become much cheaper and accessible, but there has been a lack of decent CNC routers at the same price point. Now the 3018 CNC Pro from Sainsmart aims to fill that void.

Featuring a working volume of 300 x 180 x 45mm, this CNC router goes together well and is capable of machining timber, acrylic and aluminium. It can also engrave copper to make custom PCBs. This machine largely succeeded with everything I threw at it. For this low price plus a one year warranty, I am very impressed and recommend this for beginners looking to get into the hobby.

I have done a fair bit of CNC machining over the years by am by no means a professional machinist. I look forward to the great tips knowledgeable viewers will post in the comments to assist others.
For any cutters you buy, ensure they are 1/8 inch or 3.175mm in shank diameter.

Tormach PCNC 1100! Tormach PSG! Emco V13 Lathe! Solidworks! Sprutcam!

A customer had a worn-out aluminum bracket used to drive a crank arm off a motor. Using the Tormach PCNC 1100, the Tormach Personal Surface Grinder and Emco V13 lathe, we made a much stronger replacement bracket include a custom shoulder bolt to accommodate the fact that the bracket could not be expanded on the left hand side due to machine clearance!

A good example of balancing an improved design, pride of workmanship but also getting it done efficiently!

The Haimer Zero-Master probe used to find work height can be purchased at http://amzn.to/1DPAdh2

FAQ:
*How much did it cost?
I hope to finnish it under 10K. The grounded steel plates where a big part of the cost. So if you have access to a big mill or surface grinder. you can reduce that price a lot

*How long did it take:
I made it in 5 months, on and off. between stuff

*Would I recommend building your own cnc mill?
No, only if you like really like to build one, not just own one.

*Whats that drill?
It’s a magdrill. It sticks with a electro magnet to the surface your drilling in. Its a great tool for stuff like this but has somewhat limited use.

Thats just a siemens powersupply 🙂
