CNC machining is a manufacturing process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery. The process can be used to control a range of complex machinery, from grinders and lathes to mills and routers. With CNC machining, three-dimensional cutting tasks can be accomplished in a single set of prompts.

Under CNC Machining, machine tools function through numerical control. A computer program is customized for an object and the machines are programmed with CNC machining language (called G-code) that essentially controls all features like feed rate, coordination, location and speeds. With CNC machining, the computer can control exact positioning and velocity.

I finally decided to build a CNC plasma table…I want to do this on a budget, so I will be using as much material that I have on-hand as possible, and hitting up the local scrap yards to see what I can use…Today electronics enclosure box gets mounted, and the component layout begins!!

I got the chance to visit Inventables, maker of the ShapeOko 2 CNC milling machine, and talk with CEO, Zach Kaplan. They showed me the office, workshop, warehouse and told me a lot about why they do what they do.

Folks loved the first DIY CNC Machine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKmzlMvxC7I) – now let’s build one bigger and better!

Industry grade linear rails combined with a ground ball screw and a TinyG controlled should give us a more rigid and precise machine!

We’re going to use two pneumatic cylinders and a pneumatic engraving pen to see if we can use this machine to offload some of our engraving requirements from our Tormach PCNC 1100!
