This video shows my modified Sieg X3 machining steel with a 12mm end mill. I have fitted a Promica CNC kit which was modified so that the Z screw is now on the outside of the column. The base and the entire column were filled with epoxy granite to improve rigidity. I also added double ball nuts on all the axes. The original motor was replaced with a .75 KW 3 phase induction motor driven from a variable frequency drive. The parts shown are for a ball turning attachment for my Colchester lathe

The heavy mineral cast for our CNC milling machine has hardened over night and is ready to be freed from the casting mold.
The waxed laminated boards where easy to lift from the cast.
The corners where filled with silicon.
The weight is 180 kg and the base part weights 150kg.

This time I mount the spindle, wire in spindle control to the CNC controller, align the machine and finally make some chips!

Final part was made using a 10mm indexable insert style cutter, 20,000 RPM, 1.5mm DOC, 1400mm/m feed rate..

My objective for this project is to design and build a CNC milling machine without the need for any machining of the parts. Ordinarily, building a mill requires a much bigger mill to get the axis surfaces flat and parallel.

By using aluminium tool plate (which is in theory pre-machined flat) and bolting the critical components rather than welding, it should be possible to avoid any machine work. After all, I’m building a mill because I don’t have one!

Linear rails and ball screws are the cheap Chinese 20mm style that you can find on eBay etc.
