Electrical discharge machining, or EDM, shapes metal by creating sparks that melt tiny portions of the workpiece, and is an exceptionally diverse process that generates no cutting forces. EDM is especially useful in the production of fragile parts that cannot take the stress of conventional machining.
Part of SME’s Fundamental Manufacturing Processes video series, this program examines the EDM process, and the two primary forms of electrical discharge machining, Ram EDM, and wire EDM.The EDM Process segment details the components of an EDM system, the EDM erosion process, and cycle time. The Ram EDM, or sinker EDM, segment outlines the process and presents the various process subsystems, including the power supply, dielectric fluid system, the electrode and its manufacture, and the servo system. The Wire EDM segment features the various wire EDM process subsystems, including the power supply, dielectric fluid system, the wire feeding system, and the wire positioning system. EDM holemaking is also explored.

In this video, you’re going to learn what CNC machining is and how it works. After watching you will have a good understanding of CNC machining.
00:00 Introduction. What you’ll learn from this video.
0:47 First, you’ll learn what CNC machining is and how CNC machines operate.
1:03 Second, we’ll show you the basic process of CNC machining in 3 steps. Designing a CAD model, turning that CAD file into G-code, programming the CNC machine with the G-code and finally allowing the system to execute all machining operations.
1:30 Next, you will learn why CNC machining is a price-competitive manufacturing technology for one-off custom parts and medium-volume production.
1:55 Then, we’ll show you why CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing technology and what that means. The difference between CNC machining and other manufacturing technologies will also be explained.
2:52 Next, we’ll talk about some of the materials that can be CNC machined.
3:09 Finally, you’ll learn that with CNC machining you can create highly accurate parts with very tight tolerances.

A customer had a worn-out aluminum bracket used to drive a crank arm off a motor. Using the Tormach PCNC 1100, the Tormach Personal Surface Grinder and Emco V13 lathe, we made a much stronger replacement bracket include a custom shoulder bolt to accommodate the fact that the bracket could not be expanded on the left hand side due to machine clearance!
A good example of balancing an improved design, pride of workmanship but also getting it done efficiently!
