Somehow I got carried away by the comments in the last video and decided to sharpen my welding skills trying to rebuild the mill out of steel.

I remade the entire frame out of 40x40x2 steel box and TIG welded it using a technique called winging it. As a known side effect of this technique the frame is not square, straight, coplanar, or any of the required properties for the frame of a machine like this. I solved it by shimming almost everything on it with washers of different thicknesses and a lot of brute force. In the build of the aluminium one almost everything went perfect first try, in this build I had to wrestle with it a lot, way more than I’m capable to show in a single video. The machine is obviously more rigid than the aluminium one and after a lot of fiddling with it, it is surprisingly straight where it counts and seems to even be properly trammed.

As a bonus at the end of the video I decided to obliterate some aluminium and steel with the wrong dull bit and completely wrong feeds and speeds.

As always let me know what you think in the comments.

Thanks for watching!!

DIY CNC Milling machine build.

My objective for this project was to design and build a CNC milling machine without the need for any machining of the parts. Ordinarily, building a mill requires a much bigger mill to get the axis surfaces flat and parallel.

By using aluminium tool plate (which is in theory pre-machined flat) and bolting the critical components rather than welding, it should be possible to avoid any machine work. After all, I’m building a mill because I don’t have one!

Linear rails and ball screws are the cheap Chinese 20mm style that you can find on eBay etc.

We designed and built our own DIY homemade industrial grade CNC milling machine to use for personal projects. This homebuilt machine is made from epoxy granite and has an 8 horse power spindle, servo motors all around, and an automatic tool changer. The machine weighs over 3000kg and works perfectly. All designs are my own and 100% original.

We built this machine to help us produce better quality molds for our homemade plastic injection machine. Building this DIY CNC machine at home taught us a lot about milling machines as well as the physics at play, and we hope you find this video enlightening as well.

Enjoy and post your questions ?

In recent years Fibre optic laser cutting machines have become the driving force behind the global production of sheet metal parts. WATCH NEXT VIDEO: https://youtu.be/-6JLYbaj520

The growing variety of products and smaller machines have forced manufacturers to move away from traditional methods of profiling with dies in favour of this modern fibre laser technology.

Modern laser cutters enable very high cutting performance while maintaining the ability to cut single parts and small or large batches without having to invest in expensive equipment.

Unlike the older generation of CO2 lasers, fibre lasers consume much less energy, and thanks to the shorter wavelength, the laser beam can be focused to a smaller diameter, which allows for faster cutting speeds.

Today we will see what solutions Poland manufacturer – Kimla are producing with this fibre technology.
