An improved spindle lock is added to the Precision Matthews PM25MV milling machine to safely and quickly change the tool. The improvements include a switch to tell LinuxCNC when the spindle is locked, preventing attempts at motion while locked, and a change that hastens operation. The spindle lock is installed inside of the head to avoid changing the belt drive or the belt guard. Faster tools changes greatly improves the productivity of the CNC conversion. Spindle lock concept may work on similar mills, e.g., Grizzly G0704 and Titan TM25.

The Vise Jaw Stop by Edge Technology is the most advanced jaw stop to date. It features a micro stop rod that is positioned below the top surface of the vise jaws for cutter clearance. The stop rod is also adjustable side-to-side to allow space between the unit and the workpiece for even more cutter clearance.

This time I mount the spindle, wire in spindle control to the CNC controller, align the machine and finally make some chips!

Final part was made using a 10mm indexable insert style cutter, 20,000 RPM, 1.5mm DOC, 1400mm/m feed rate..

Enjoy!

DIY CNC Milling machine build.

My objective for this project is to design and build a CNC milling machine without the need for any machining of the parts. Ordinarily, building a mill requires a much bigger mill to get the axis surfaces flat and parallel.

By using aluminium tool plate (which is in theory pre-machined flat) and bolting the critical components rather than welding, it should be possible to avoid any machine work. After all, I’m building a mill because I don’t have one!

Linear rails and ball screws are the cheap Chinese 20mm style that you can find on eBay etc.

Finally video with our big CNC milling machine! We had also pretty large part with almost 3 meter long cut.

This video shows the first construction phase of my CNC machine. I do this for a hobby, so I can only build when I’m not at my full-time job, so I have to do this in different stages.

Here is the x-axis. I designed it to run along heavy duty 24″ drawer slides, and it seems like it will be a useable way to go about it. I guess we’ll see!

In this video, I show how I went about building a CNC 4th axis for a small milling machine.
