This time I mount the spindle, wire in spindle control to the CNC controller, align the machine and finally make some chips!

Final part was made using a 10mm indexable insert style cutter, 20,000 RPM, 1.5mm DOC, 1400mm/m feed rate..

Enjoy!

My objective for this project is to design and build a CNC milling machine without the need for any machining of the parts. Ordinarily, building a mill requires a much bigger mill to get the axis surfaces flat and parallel.

By using aluminium tool plate (which is in theory pre-machined flat) and bolting the critical components rather than welding, it should be possible to avoid any machine work. After all, I’m building a mill because I don’t have one!

Linear rails and ball screws are the cheap Chinese 20mm style that you can find on eBay etc.

After way too long incredibly satisfying build process it’s time to test the IndyMill! After finishing cable management I put my new CNC to a lot of tests with various materials and different settings.

It was a long journey! I am happy and sad at the same time that it’s the end of this project 🙁
But wait, is it? Of course not, it’s just the beginning, so many materials to test, so many things to make and so many ideas. I hope you enjoyed the series and that you will follow my new projects, there is some exciting stuff coming up! As always any feedback is highly appreciated 😀

In this episode I use my brother’s CNC router (that he originally built for making guitars) to machine out the Z axis motor mount and I build my own 70 volt DC power supply for the stepper motors…

Transformer: Toroidal 750VA 230v AC – 24 x 24 AC output – wired in series – AirlinkTransformers.com
Vishay GBPC3504-E4/51 Bridge Rectifier
3x 4700μF 100V DC 35mm Capacitors
2x 1K2 5W resistors wired in series to discharge capacitors when mains power removed.

Still to do – Fuse the 48V output from transformer and individual outputs to Stepper Drivers.

In this video I begin wiring up the machine, mounting the limit switches and attaching the drag chain for the X axis wiring.
